I passed my notary exam! A year ago I started looking into becoming a notary. Yes, it took me a year but that was because I dragged it out.

You can get it done quicker if you dedicate the time to it. At the start of this year I said, I'm doing it! No more procrastination and to be honest my lessons would be expiring at the end of March 2022, and I did no want that to be money down the drain.

Where to start?

I had many of you reach out and ask how or what I did to start. So here it goes!

I did everything through National Notary Association (NNA). Since I was working a lot I wanted something I could do on my own and at my own pace. I searched for online courses, I came upon NNA, and they had the best reviews and seem legit.

I purchased the:

  • California Required 6 Hour Notary Online Training ($179.00)

I added the:

  • LiveScan Fingerprinting & Application Photo ($115.00)

    • You can do it on your own and save money. But KNOW that you NEED this with you the day of the exam. (I knew I wasn't going to have time so I chose convenience)

For a Grand Total of: $294.00

*I didn't order any of the notary packages (supplies and E&O). But it is something you will need in the future after you pass your exam. You can get it with NNA or shop around.

Why NNA?

Convenience. With the pandemic going on and my crazy work and personal life schedule I wanted something I could do at my own pace. NNA is pretty big as they have courses for all 50 states and Washington D.C.

Once purchased, the training is very easy. You log in, go to the e-training center, press start and you move through the lessons. The lessons are interactive so you need to pay attention.

  • There is a total of 6 Lessons, 1 hour each.

  • Remember, you are required to take a 6 hour course to take the exam

After you have completed the lessons and passed the quiz, you are given your certificate and they ask you to set your date for the exam.

Exam

Sadly I don't remember much about the exam like how many questions. What I do remember is that:

  • It was between 40-50 questions.

  • Multiple questions, each question has 4 answers

  • Answers are filled on a scantron

  • Closed book

  • Need a passing score of 70%

  • I don't remember how much time we had for the exam, but I think it was 1 Hour

The 90 min refresher that the NNA offers before your exam is really helpful! This is something they started doing since the pandemic. The one thing that I think you really need to pay attention to while studying is vocabulary and the fees/penalties.

The company that administers the exam is a third party, not part of the Secretary of State(SOS) or NNA (proctored exam). After the exam it takes about 21 days to hear from the third party if you passed or not.

After you are notified that you passed your exam, the check made out to SOS, photo I.D., and background check are forwarded to the Secretary of State by the third party. Currently that is where I am right now, waiting.

I hope this helps anyone looking to become a notary! Remember when you become a notary you become an employee and representation of the state of California. This is a serious job.

Notes:

I have attached to this post my practice questions that I noted down while doing the practice quizzes.
